The Toxins You're Already Carrying: The Hidden Sources That May Be Affecting Your Health

Most conversations about toxins stay vague. "Eat clean. Avoid chemicals. Drink more water."

But if you've been dealing with fatigue, hormonal struggles, brain fog, or recurring infections, vague isn't enough. You need to know which toxins are most likely affecting you, where they're actually coming from, and why they matter so much for how you feel every single day.

This post covers five of the most common and impactful toxic burdens we see in our clients at Discover Health, with a special focus on what these toxins mean specifically for women, for fertility, and for the babies we carry and nourish.

Glyphosate: The Herbicide That Got Into Everything

Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup and one of the most widely used herbicides in the world. It was originally designed to kill weeds by disrupting a specific biological pathway. The problem is that the same pathway it disrupts in plants also exists in the bacteria that make up your gut microbiome.

Glyphosate has been detected in rain, drinking water, breast milk, and urine samples across the United States. It disrupts the gut microbiome, impairs liver detoxification, and has been linked to mineral depletion, particularly of manganese, zinc, and cobalt, all minerals your body needs for energy production and immune function.

It shows up most heavily in conventionally grown grains, legumes, and oats, including many foods marketed as healthy. Buying organic where possible, especially for the foods you eat most often, is one of the most straightforward ways to reduce your daily glyphosate load.

Mold and Mycotoxins: The Hidden Indoor Threat

Mold itself isn't the primary problem. The mycotoxins that certain molds produce are. These are chemical compounds that mold releases as part of its normal biology, and they are some of the most potent biological toxins known to science.

Mycotoxins are fat-soluble, which means they store in fatty tissue, including the brain. They suppress immune function, disrupt mitochondrial energy production, and create exactly the kind of internal terrain where other infections and overgrowths can take hold.

Water-damaged buildings are the most common source, but mycotoxins also show up in coffee, grains, nuts, and dried fruits. Many people have no idea they're being chronically exposed, because mold is often hidden behind walls, under flooring, or in HVAC systems. If you've ever felt dramatically better after leaving your home for an extended period, mold is worth investigating seriously.

Heavy Metals: Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, and Arsenic

Heavy metals accumulate over time and don't leave the body easily without intentional support. They deposit in bone, brain tissue, and organs, and they have a particular affinity for mitochondria, which is a significant part of why heavy metal burden so often shows up as exhaustion and cognitive impairment.

Common sources include old paint and plumbing (lead), dental amalgam fillings (mercury), contaminated fish (mercury and arsenic), cigarette smoke (cadmium), and conventionally grown rice and root vegetables (arsenic and cadmium from soil).

Mercury deserves special attention for women. Amalgam fillings, which are approximately 50% mercury, continuously off-gas mercury vapor, particularly during chewing and teeth grinding. That vapor is absorbed through the lungs and distributed throughout the body. For women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or who are planning to become pregnant, this is not a small consideration. Mercury crosses the placental barrier and is present in breast milk.

Aluminum: Closer Than You Think

Aluminum is not a heavy metal in the traditional sense, but it behaves similarly in the body. It accumulates in tissue, has been found in brain tissue of individuals with neurological conditions, and disrupts numerous enzymatic processes.

The most common daily sources are conventional antiperspirant deodorants (aluminum compounds are the active ingredient that blocks sweat), aluminum-containing baking powder used in commercially baked goods, cookware, and some vaccines and medications.

The body does have mechanisms for clearing aluminum, but like all toxins, when the burden exceeds the drainage capacity, it accumulates. Supporting drainage pathways is one of the most effective strategies for reducing aluminum load over time.
